It's funny how some things can come together so magically until a monkey wrench gets tossed in to create a little havoc.
Several months ago, we contacted all the events we hoped to cover in 2002 to let them know that disctv was headed their way and make sure everything was copasetic. Falling into our definition of copasetic was to ensure that each event would be holding a final nine holes for the top four or five players. This part of the event not only showcases the best players each week, it also allows us to bring viewers complete coverage of the winner's last nine holes. Without a final nine, the winner might shoot up from the second or third card, and with only two cameras, we could very easily miss that important action.
One of those events contacted months ago was the Seneca Creek Soiree in Gaithersburg Maryland, which is happening this weekend. Miscommunication ensued, and by the time we checked back in with the Soiree folks this week, the word was "no final nine."
The TD was very nice in saying no, but after long attempts to address the needs of both parties, the answer was still no. No is no, so whatayagonnado? We can't cover the event without the final nine, so we can't cover the Soiree. Sorry folks.
The real kick-in-the-pants over this situation is that, only four weeks into a 31-week season, we find ourselves already reaching for one of our precious backup shows taped earlier this spring. We had hoped to keep these shows reserved for weather-related disasters and other emergencies, but at this late hour, we have no other choice.
